Welcome to the Mediterranean
The Mediterranean has some stories to tell. Its shores have borne witness to the rise and fall of civilizations, to war and peace, and to the exchange of goods and cultures that have shaped its rich tapestry of peoples from the shores of southern Europe to westernmost Asia and across North Africa. For some, it conjures up images of idyllic beaches, for others the burden of overtourism. It sustains life; and takes it.
The Mediterranean is warming 20% faster than the rest of the world. Already, some 180 million people in the region are considered water poor and 20 million lack access to clean drinking water.
This issue highlights the need for international collaboration towards climate solutions, starting off with a Special Guest Editorial from European Commission Director-General for Environment Florika Fink-Hoijer, who reflects on the role of desalination in building Europe’s Water Resilience Strategy.
We have stories of two geographical extremes: starting with climate change realities in the Himalayas with input from Dr David Molden, before plunging into the contentious issue of deep-sea mining in Norway with award-winning journalist Boštjan Videmšek.
REVOLVE’s own Dr Nazih Toubal takes us back to the Mediterranean to examine the cross-border cooperation required to address shared water and energy challenges. This issue’s VIEWS offers a visual tour of human interactions with the Mediterranean, before Global Renewables Alliance CEO Bruce Douglas makes a case for tripling renewables by 2030.
We then shift our gaze to Bangladesh for Summer Felson’s biting critique on fly ash shipping through the Sundarbans natural reserves followed by a more optimistic look at the potential of ridesharing by Emma Finnamore. We conclude with a closer look at circular design in Brazil’s favelas from Ester Carro, architect, activist, and president of the Fazendinhando Institute.
