Redefining climate action and the climate vocabulary.

In the past months, the Fridays for Future climate marches have seen school children leave their classrooms and take to the streets to make sure that their angst at the inaction of governments is noticed.

Led by Greta Thunberg from Sweden, a 16-year-old, this plan quickly caught on with strikes in Belgium every Thursday until the European elections, and from there this grew to the Global March for Climate. Terminology among climate activists has also changed, where a ‘climate emergency’ has been called as something more relevant to describe the state of the world’s environment.

The United Kingdom and various jurisdictions in 13 countries have now declared a ‘climate emergency’, in most cases it is cities or local councils who have taken the initiative with the exception of the UK, whose parliament passed the climate emergency on 13 May 2019.
