Locals Take Climate Action
As the European Union steers towards its ambitious 2050 goals of carbon neutrality, energy initiatives are finding success in inclusivity, transparency, and co-design.
Change is taking place at regional and local levels via energy communities, which place energy ownership and distribution in the hands of the people, ensuring equitable and democratic access to a vital resource. In Europe’s cities, Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans (SECAPs) are helping local officials to plot and implement new policies hand-in-hand with citizens.
These ground-up approaches to the energy transition can ensure that citizens are not seen as passive policy recipients but are involved in the shaping of their own futures, empowering them as important actors in the energy transition.
This issue of REVOLVE opens with a special guest editorial from Ecoserveis project manager Camila Canelas Navarro on the importance of good governance for the success of energy communities. Then REVOLVE’s Dr. Nazih Toubal shows us the ins and outs of SECAPs implementation, with a successful case study in Modena.
From there, REVOLVE’s Nicolás Marín Navas digs into some of the controversies around hyperscale data centres in Spain, where the topic of water is particularly contentious. Then we head to Lebanon for more optimistic look at the potential of renewables with Dr. Joseph Al Assad, President and Director of the Lebanese Center for Energy Conservation.
This issue’s VIEWS takes us to India, where women farmers are using solar pumps to gain empowerment and opportunities. This issue’s water feature comes from AMWAJ Media Fellow Basma El Atti with an intriguing look into cloud seeding conspiracies in Morocco. REVOLVE’s Lauren Beauchamp takes to Norway’s Arctic to explore ocean resilience before we hear from REVOLVE’s Asya Al Marhubi on the quest for net zero maritime shipping. Then it’s over to ACCIONA Construcción’s Daniel Hiniesto Muñoz de la Torre to learn about circular construction.
