Benefits of Nature
How often do you yearn to be in nature? A walk along the beach, through the woods or by a gentle river is scientifically proven to do wonders for your mental health. Nature has the ability to restore us.
Throughout human history, we have altered nature’s course to meet our needs. There is, however, a balance to be struck. The overexploitation of the natural world has consequences that are being exacerbated by a changing climate.
In the EU, 60-70% of soil is classified as degraded thanks, in large part, to decades of unsustainable farming. Globally, we stand on the precipice of massive biodiversity loss, with one million out of an estimated eight million species threatened with extinction. Each year, we deforest an area the size of Iceland, reducing the Earth’s natural capacity to capture carbon.
The well-being of our natural world is a reflection of our own. Do we have what it takes to return the favour and restore nature?
This issue of REVOLVE is opened with a special guest editorial by Rewilding Europe founder and executive director Frans Schepers, who lays out his case for rewilding as a gold standard of ecological recovery.
This leads us into the lead feature from Marta Castillo, who provides snapshots of some key landscape restoration projects underway in the Iberian Peninsula. From there we jump to Sweden to see how winegrowers are adapting to new climes.
This issue’s VIEWS takes us to the forests of Castilla La-Mancha, where Rewilding Spain is reviving old ecosystems functions with the endangered Przewalski’s horse. Then, we take a closer look at the climate impacts of hydrogen, to be handled with care. We take a trip to Palestine to discuss water scarcity with expert Majeda Alawneh before heading to India to hear from Aswathy Dilip about an initiative to make India’s streets safer.
We follow this a profile of the Switchers initiative by Nicolás Marin and conclude with a review of ‘The Language of Climate Politics.’
