Reporting Climate Justice: The Role of Journalism in Driving Change

The AMWAJ community will gather to celebrate World Water Day 2025 with an online webinar delving on how to approach climate journalism from a climate justice framework. This first Tabadul event of 2025, organised in collaboration with our media partners ARIJ (Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism) and Marea Media, will explore how journalists can better integrate this framework into their reporting, both for social acceptance and for fair and effective legislation to respond to climate change.   

Ahmed Ashour from ARIJ will give an introduction to climate justice and its importance for journalists, featuring the guide “Climate Justice: Through an Investigative Lens”, co-developed by him under the SHARAKA for Inclusive Climate Action Project. The resource is available in Arabic, so this webinar will give non-Arabic speakers a first-hand look at the tool.

Next, Marea Media journalists Sofia Turati and Vittoria Torsello will present two case studies on climate justice reporting, focusing on the socio-economic and political impacts of climate change in local communities. Sofia Turati will present the fight against a new pipeline in the heart of the Italian Apennine Mountains and Vittoria Torsello will present the case study of the investigative article ‘We ask to be recognised’: small fishers claim €12bn EU fund favours big players’. Both of them will discuss their methodology, the publication process, and community-driven solutions to climate challenges in these stories.

The event aims to inspire others to include a climate justice lens in their reporting on climate change in order to support climate action and give a voice to vulnerable and local communities.
