Gianluigi Buttiglieri obtained his PhD in Sanitary and Environmental Engineering (2008) from Politecnico di Milano, Italy. After two years of postdoc in Politecnico di Milano (2008-2010) in 2010 he moved to ICRA. Since January 2016 he is research scientist (Ramón y Cajal) at ICRA.

His main expertise is in environmental engineering and his research is focused on the fate of organic micropollutants in the environment and in wastewater treatment plants (conventional activated sludge systems, enriched and pure strain biomass, membrane bioreactors, wetlands, advanced oxidation systems, pool water disinfection) as well as on membrane bioreactor systems, fouling of membranes and decision support systems and, more recently, on water reuse and circular economy issues.

He was the scientific coordinator of the FP7 European demEAUmed (www.demeaumed.eu) project, he was involved in many projects and actually PI of a H2020 project for ICRA (HYDROUSA) and co-PI of a RETOS project (CLEaN-TOUR).
