UNDP The Power of Democracy

The EU and the UNDP organized a photo exhibition “The Power of Democracy” to raise awareness about the importance of democracy and its impact on development. The exhibition showcased the electoral assistance provided by the EU and UNDP in countries such as Armenia, Guinea, Kenya, Lebanon, Liberia, Malawi, Nepal, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The European Union (EU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are two of the world’s largest electoral assistance providers. Sharing a common vision about the values of democracy, the EU and UNDP have supported 185 elections worldwide, including in 20 post-conflict settings. A particular focus of the EU-UNDP electoral support is to empower women and youth to ensure their participation as both voters and candidates.

In the lead up to the 73rd General Assembly of the United Nations and on the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the EC-UNDP Joint Task Force on Electoral Assistance brought ‘The Power of Diplomacy’ Exhibition to the UN HQ in New York after a successful period in Brussels earlier in 2018. The EU and UNDP are currently working together in nearly 140 countries on 217 projects to enhance democratic governance and the rule of law, build resilience and recover from crisis and disasters, and adapt to climate change. The exhibition was opened by Mar Dieye, Assistant Secretary General of UNDP, who noted ‘This exhibition today is an opportunity not only to showcase the work of the entire UN family in electoral cycle support, but also to celebrate our partnerships and to reaffirm our commitment to working together toward our shared goal – inclusive and participatory governance, leading to sustainable development and more peaceful, safe and resilient nations’.
